Seasonal and Interannual Variability of Tidal Mixing Signatures in Indonesian Seas from High-Resolution Sea Surface Temperature

نویسندگان

چکیده

With their complex narrow passages and vigorous mixing, the Indonesian seas provide only low-latitude pathway between Pacific Indian Oceans thus play an essential role in regulating Pacific-Indian Ocean exchange, regional air-sea interaction, ultimately, global climate phenomena. While previous investigations using remote sensing numerical simulations strongly suggest that this mixing is tidally driven, impacts of monsoon El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on tidal must important role. Here we use high-resolution sea surface temperature from June 2002 to 2021 reveal ENSO modulations mixing. The largest spring-neap (fortnightly) signals are found be localized passages/straits sills, with more during southeast (boreal summer) than northwest winter monsoon) La Niña. Therefore, which necessarily responds seasonal interannual changes stratification, also a feedback variability water mass transformations throughflow. findings have implications for longer-term variations Pacific–Indian ocean transformation, circulation, climate.

Seasonal to interannual variability in Antarctic sea-ice surface melt

Satellite remote sensing time-series images are used to illustrate the spatial and temporal variability in Antarctic-wide seaice surface melting during the austral summer. Combinations of collocated data from the Active Microwave Instrument on board the ERS-1/2 spacecraft, RadarSat Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and SSM/I passive microwave radiometer are used in characterization of the effects ...

Spatial patterns in seasonal and interannual variability of chlorophyll and sea surface temperature in the California Current

[1] Physical forcing and biological response within the California Current System (CCS) are highly variable over a wide range of scales. Satellite remote sensing offers the only feasible means of quantifying this variability over the full extent of the CCS. Using six years (1997–2003) of daily SST and chlorophyll imagery, we map the spatial dependence of dominant temporal variability at resolut...

Interannual variability in Nordic seas primary production

Phytoplankton represents the primary trophic level in marine pelagic ecosystems, through which most biological material produced by photosynthesis is further channelled through the foodweb via grazing by zooplankton. Therefore, the level and variability of primary production is believed to be an important factor for fish recruitment and growth. The Nordic seas are important feeding areas for la...
